Cast your mind back to your childhood. What are the memories that bring a smile to your face? Riding your bike, exploring new, unfamiliar places, being out and about with friends? Probably, because these are the things that today’s adults enjoyed as children, with 70% experiencing most of their adventures outdoors.
Sustrans believe that it’s time to get this back. They believe that every child deserves to be free range and experience the freedom from their front door to go exploring, play outdoors, and make their own way to school and beyond.
The Free Range Kids campaign wants to give children, their parents and teachers the opportunity to make a change. By signing their pledge you are supporting their change which calls for 20 miles per hour speed limits in residential areas, and greater investment in walking and cycling routes, particularly around schools. Over 8,000 people have signed up so far, but we want you to help them reach their target of 10,000!
You can also encourage children to enter the ‘Be a Two-Zero Hero’ competition to design a postcard around the theme of slower traffic speeds. Children could be in with the chance to win prizes for them and their schools – more information can be found here
