Onwards and upwards in Peckham

In June 2012, Nicholas Okwulu organised a Big Lunch in Peckham with the aim of bringing people together to promote a stronger sense of community and improve the lives of people in the community. In December 2012, his local community welcomed Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall when they came to meet and support Big Lunch organisers, local residents and volunteers involved in running events for the community during the Christmas period.

Nicholas describes the year as “monumental for people empowering people” and is now looking to set up a food bank for local residents. Here’s Nicholas’s Big Lunch story:

“The great thing about The Big lunch is that it has brought our community together in a big way, meeting volunteers with various skills and resources and building everlasting friendships.

All this would not have been possible without The Big Lunch previously taking place on the two estates; Unwin and Friary, and Ledbury, along with the help of the residents, local organisations and the team of volunteers that we met while organising The Big Lunch.

Being the organiser of The Big Lunch in Peckham made life a lot easier, especially when we were organising the events such as The Big Jubilee Lunch last June. Everybody chipped in, it wasn’t about just ‘saying’ but people were ‘doing’ and delivering on their promises.

In December 2012 we welcomed Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. From the get go everybody was on board doing what was needed, from the tidying of the hall at the venue to organising the carol singing with the local schools and nurseries. It was a complete joy seeing everyone come together.

We are now organising our next big feat which is to set up a local food bank on the Old Kent Road with local Church The Everlasting Arms Ministry and The Best Before Project.

Young Lunchers

Not only did we come together for one big day, but many of us have become friends for life, bringing back together a sense of what community spirit should be about.

Right now we are planning to add another two Big Lunches to the neighbouring two estates, in total taking it up to four for 2013!

Onwards and upwards, and thank you!”
